More Than A Degree, You Need Skills (Validated)

Ah, how the Wall Street Journal validates that which I espouse in all my programs, books, blog posts, and more!
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2010 survey lists the following skills as those that employers seek:
- Communication Skills
- Analytical Skills
- Teamwork Skills
- Technical Skills
- Strong Work Ethic
I highlighted them in green because they are where the money is. (Poor grammar; rich advice.)
Got a Sense of Humor? You’ll Need it at Despair, Inc.

Are you a fan of the "Successories (TM)" product line? Well, get over it! There's an opposing camp of demotivators called "Despair, Inc. (TM)" and it is a hoot! You have to have a sense of humor to appreciate the product line and site – especially the FAQs. Dr. E.L. Kersten, the founder, is a real person. You can purchase the book, "The Rise of Mr. Ponzi", by Charles Ponzi, from the site (for real!) The irony, sarcasm, insults (in a nice way), and tongue-in-cheek messages are excellent. I love this stuff.
Life Skills…Important for Students?
Found this article addressing life skills and schools. What's happened to teaching young people the transferable skills they need and will apply throughout their lives (instead of how to pass tests)? Here's one perspective.

Choose to Dance: Dedication to My Mom, @ 95 Years Young
February 6, 2010 by Sylvia · 2 Comments
My mother is my inspiration for establishing supportive relationships and getting out to find joy in living.
While she is now unable to dance (at 95 years old, though still going strong in her own way) she once embraced the meaning of the words to the song recorded by Lee Ann Womack…"I Hope You Dance".
When YOU face a decision as to whether to sit down and give up or get out and get moving…I hope YOU choose the later (metaphor = dance!)

Occasionally, an article appears in the news about how terrible it is that an organization restricts its employees' self-expression by imposing strict dress and grooming codes. Because my programs and books focus on professionalism, interpersonal skills and perceptions, I love to see these articles and use them as examples-both pro and con-of how companies communicate and enforce corporate cultural norms.

I staff a book expo table for my books, card decks, and audio products and I watch people walk by. I love people-watching! What I experience is that those who come up to my table to pick through my products and talk a lot of nonsense look and sound like they most need what they do not buy (books and audio products on success, speaking clearly, and presenting oneself positively).

What does physical fitness have to do with success language? Everything! Success language = everything you do and say that communicates (language) who you are and what you stand for (success). Your physical conditioning is part of what you do to be ready for and manage your successes…and your actions leading up to your successes. If you feel good you "do good".
